24th May 2024 – Romesh Ranganathan – Hustle 2024 Tour – !st night and Solo Debut at the O2, London
Friday night at the start of the bank holiday weekend as the warm up DJ – Martin2Smoove, kept telling the audience, the sell out O2 was in a relaxed mood, and eagerly anticipating the arrival on stage of standup comedian Romesh Ranganathan, for his highly anticipated stadium debut, marking a pivotal moment in his rapidly rising career.
You would have to be on another planet, not to have any idea who Romesh is, having been on our TVs for some time now. Romesh, 46 (older than I thought), known for his likeable wit and relatable humor, has steadily climbed the comedy ladder with his popular programmes on Sky, and his BAFTA award wining show with Rob Beckett. Now the host of “The Weakest Link” on BBC, he also possesses that sardonic acid tongued wit, that makes this show very popular.
The idea of Stand up comedy is to get your audience relaxed and laughing from the start, which must be one of the hardest jobs ever, but no worries here. Kicking off, I definitely now know who his “favorite actor is”, and as a former teacher, he delved into his previous career, I shall remember his tale about a Pasty, every time I’m in Greggs.
He entertained up to the interval, cleverly covering subjects as racism, Mc Donalds chicken nuggets, working at Sainsbury’s, family bereavement/long lost relatives, and Arsenal windmills.
Part two continued, without any drop off in atmosphere, if anything the humour intensified from the 1st half. Romesh went on to cover numerous subjects, including, Family/holidays, Amazon/hypocrisy, Premier league, Couples/Parties/Small Talk, Mates, Hygiene, Hip Hop, Vegans and Chessington Jordans.
I was there for my birthday present from my two daughters, both with me, it wasn’t my Idea surprisingly, but this performance had me laughing from start to finish. On stage for 2 hours, that takes talent and ability, and on this performance Romesh is on the road to super stardom.
